Medina has rules when it comes to trees

Medina’s tree code has morphed and changed over the last 50 years from the adoption of the tree and vegetation public right-of-way all the way up to today’s amendments to the tree code. Trees with diameters of 20 inches or more are defined as significant and there are some regulations and requirements to removing these types of trees.

According to the city of Medina, property owners must obtain a tree removal permit and provide tree replacement methods for the following:

  • Removal of any tree on private property that has a diameter of 20 inches or more.
  • Removal of any tram private property that has a diameter of 10 inches or more and is documented as a significant tree species by the city where the tree removal is part of a new development or reconstruction.
  • Removal of trees on public property within the city right-of-way by a private property owner.

The requirements for a permit can be waived when the tree is evaluated and designated as a hazardous tree by the city arborist. That doesn’t just mean anyone can come out and determine that the tree is hazardous. It is defined as hazardous when it exhibits a threat of injury to people or significant damage to private property. If the tree receives a hazardous rating of 11 or 12, this city can exempt the removal of the tree from the requirements for tree removal permit and replacement mitigation.

What about a tree that’s a hazard or dangerous?

If you’re looking to remove a hazardous tree there’s a $360 per tree plus and $19.75 technology fee. You must attach a completed application form, site plan drawing with the property boundaries, hazardous designation and the names of nearby public streets or private lanes to provide access to the property, legal description of the property, proof of property ownership, and a photograph of the tree.

Whew! That’s a lot of information right there plus that’s pretty spendy! They also have administrative tree activity permits for removing a fit tree, which there is a slew of other details and requirements needed.

Don’t be confused, just call us

All in all, it’s important to talk to your city and to your city arborist about the best way to move forward in removing either a hazardous, significant or any type of tree on your private property. If you have questions or if you completely confused by Medina’s rulings, call us today. We are happy to clarify all the details before you go out and apply or by a permit.
